Have you ever been on vacation, and stayed in a cozy cabin or cottage, "You know, this is really all you need to live in!"?

The prototype 24' x 32' Newcomb timber frame house can serve as a cottage or a year-round home for a couple or single person. It makes a great retirement home - all one one level, a heated floor, and quick to clean. It also makes a nice starter home, vacation cottage or timeshare unit.

With 928 sq. ft. of living space if built on a slab, it makes a very livable small house. Plans are included for regular and walk-out basements.

This timber frame design is a hybrid: the timber roof sits on a regular 2"x6" exterior wall rather than on posts and top plates like a full timber frame. Hybrids give all the beauty of timber frame construction with less timber, and therefore less cost.

Features:

It's bigger on the inside than it looks like from the outside - we hear this comment a lot!

With in-floor hot water heat, the house is small enough to heat easily with a 60-gallon hot water heater, which can be powered by gas, electricity, oil or solar power (or a combination). There's no need for a boiler or furnace!

The in-floor heating needs only one zone. Individual areas, like bedrooms, can have a different temperature by adjusting the valves on the three hot water loops.

There are lots of windows - especially the wrap-around windows in the kitchen/dining area.

You'll see beautiful vaulted ceilings everywhere except the bathroom and office which are under the loft.

The 14th-century-style timber roof is not merely decorative. That's the roof. Timber posts, beams, and curved knee braces lend an timeless ambience, and also define "rooms" within the open concept.

Pull-down stairs in front of the bathroom provide access to a 194 sq. ft. loft/storage area. There's room there for an extra bed, and plenty of space for visiting kids to "camp out".

This is a 20’x28’ building that can be used for a workshop or, with some changes to doors and windows and creative floor plan, perhaps a cottage or starter home.

The whole set of Shop Prints for the Cooper Shop consists of 26 pages. To see the level of information we provide, see the joinery page samples.

Features of the Cooper Shop drawings

1.Optional chain hoist provision

There are detailed drawings of a chain hoist system that travels on a track under the collar ties. It is based on the system we have in our timber frame shop, made from a standard barn door track, sold at all farm supply stores.

Imagine backing your pickup truck in the big doors with a wood stove, engine, or piano, or some other heavy and totally awkward thing on board and hoisting it up to the second floor. From there it can be slid along and set down anywhere under the ridge, all done by yourself in minutes without a hand from anyone.

2. Nailer plan

The nailer system is a time proven method of enclosure, seen in old barns across north America. Nailers are small members that span between posts horizontally, and as their name suggests, are used to nail vertical sheathing, often board and batten.

3. Option of full 2nd floor or loft

The timber floor framing plan comes in three versions; a full second floor, full floor with opening for chain hoist version, or a loft over one of the two bays.

4.Joinery

There are detailed drawings of all the joints in the frame, as well as peg placements.

5. Optional Enclosure Systems

The plans include construction sections detailing a stud wall enclosure as well as wall systems using nailers, either insulated or un-insulated.

We are pleased to offer another versatile design in our series of shop print projects, the Fish Shack.

With 230 sq. ft. on each floor, it would make a great Tiny House with 460 sq. ft. of living space with an upstairs bedroom and a downstairs bath, as illustrated.

Imagine what else you could do with this attractive 17’ x 13’6” building! At home by the water’s edge, the Fish Shack could function as a seaside cottage. It is ideal for use as a small retail outlet for any type of cottage industry. It’s a natural for antiques, crafts, folk art, and would serve well for an information center.

The complete set of Shop Prints for the Fish Shack consists of 21 pages. We have included samples of joinery and framing detail pages that show the level of information we provide.

Features of the Fish Shack drawings

1.Optional outside stair

The upstairs of the Fish Shack can be accessed from an outside stair. A space-saving ladder provides access on the inside.

2. Nailer plan

The nailer system is a time proven method of enclosure, seen in old barns across north America. Nailers are small members that span between posts horizontally, and as their name suggests, are used to nail vertical sheathing, often board and batten .

3. Option of full 2nd floor or loft

The timber floor framing plan comes in two versions; a full second floor with inside or outside stair, or a loft over one of the two bays.

4.Joinery & peg details

There are detailed drawings of all the joints in the frame, as well as peg placements.

5. General notes

6. Timber List

Each timber is listed with its dimension and length.

This 12×20′ shed has a decidedly old time industrial look, with no windows except long narrow ones with single panes fairly high up, for light.

These work very well, particularly on a north facing wall. We have built many studios over for the years for artisans of all types; painters, wood sculptors, stained glass artists, etc. They prefer the north light because it makes no shadows.

We like the fact that would be thieves cannot easily see into the shed without some effort. Laziness seems to go hand in hand with thievery. Generators, chainsaws, power tools, etc., may be a temptation best left unseen.

Many old Nova Scotia barns have that long row of single panes over the big main door. That door opens to what was called the “threshing floor”, and cattle and other things were on each side. The threshing floor was usually kept clear, so a wagon (loaded with hay, veggies, etc.) could be brought inside during an emergency, usually a weather event. It was also used for building projects, repairs during the winter.

Back to the point – the windows were crucial to let in light when the big door was closed, and it almost always was. My grandfather used to refer to those windows as “lights”.

Although these drawings contain much more information than a timber framer would normally require, it is recommended that you have some experience in the actual cutting of timber joinery.

This is a 16’x22’ building that can be used for a variety of purposes. As a workshop, its heavy timbers permit the use of hoists and other machinery requiring structural strength.

It is also ideal for a small retail outlet for any type of cottage industry. It’s a natural for antiques, crafts, folk art, and would serve well as an information center.

We think that a building this size, with its interesting timber frame construction and old time feel, easily earns its name, “The Ultimate Workshop”.
